May marks the beginning of something extraordinary as more and more Manta Rays start to gather for Baa Atoll’s world famous manta ray season. As the Southwest Monsoon sweeps across the Indian Ocean, it brings nutrient-rich currents that transform Hanifaru Bay and it’s surrounding areas into the world’s largest manta ray feeding ground. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve becomes the stage for one of nature’s most spectacular shows, where 100s of manta rays gather in plankton rich waters to feast on dense clouds of plankton.

The Hanifaru Bay Experience

Hanifaru Bay is a keyhole-shaped marine sanctuary measuring 700 meters by 200 meters. This becomes a natural plankton trap created by unique tidal currents. When conditions align, we will be able to witness the breathtaking “cyclone feeding” phenomenon where 50 or more manta rays form spectacular spiraling vortexes as they filter-feed together. Over 1,800 individual manta rays have been catalogued here through 18 years of scientific research by the Maldivian Manta Ray Project.
