The Hanifaru Bay Experience

Hanifaru Bay is a keyhole-shaped marine sanctuary measuring 700 meters by 200 meters. This becomes a natural plankton trap created by unique tidal currents. During September’s peak, conditions align most often, and we witness the breathtaking “cyclone feeding” phenomenon at its most spectacular – where 100 or more manta rays form spiraling vortexes as they filter-feed together. Over 1,800 individual manta rays have been catalogued here through 18 years of scientific research by the Maldivian Manta Ray Project.
